SUMMARY:Ladies of 20th Century Pennsylvania Dutch Literature and Illustration
DESCRIPTION:For our March Second Saturday program\, Candace K. Perry\, Curator of the Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center\, has meticulously researched the journey of female authors and illustrators who have incorporated Pennsylvania German themes into their works of fiction and non-fiction. Perry’s research covers women like Helen R. Martin\, the author of Tillie the Mennonite Maid\, and Katherine Milhous\, author and illustrator of Appolonia’s Valentine. These talented ladies paved the way for present-day “bonnet fiction” authors\, but their themes were often centered on anachronisms\, folk beliefs\, and patriarchal attitudes that they perceived as part of Pennsylvania German culture. \nThis program will be held in person\, inside the BHC Museum Auditorium. The cost of this program is $5 for BHC members and $8 for non-members. Coffee\, hot tea\, juice\, and light refreshments will be made available for participants at 9:30 AM. \nThe snow date of this program is 3/16/24.

DESCRIPTION:This selection is for an Online Advanced class on Wednesdays from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM. These courses will be held on the following Wednesdays: 3/6\, 3/13\, 3/20\, 3/27\, 4/3\, 4/10\, 4/17\, and 4/24. Participants can become a BHC member by signing up online at https://www.berkshistory.org/membership/. \nOur advanced course builds upon its predecessor\, continuing the deep dive into grammar and vocabulary\, and covering chapters 7-12 of the textbook Schwetz Mol Deitch by Douglas Madenford and Joshua Brown. Similar to the intermediate level\, this eight-week course will include two weeks for practice and review. Students are strongly encouraged to take the intermediate course prior to the advanced level\, since the two are closely connected. Students are required to purchase this textbook on their own. \nEvent Location\nBerks History Center
