SUMMARY:Community Seed Swap
DESCRIPTION:If you are a gardener\, care about the environment\, love a good deal or want to share your love of seed saving with like-minded community members please join the Penn State Berks County Master Gardeners in partnership with Berks Nature to our inaugural Community Seed Swap on National Seed Swap Day – January 25th\, 2025 from 10am to 1pm with doors opening at 9:30. The event will be at the Berks Nature Center – 575 St. Bernardine Street\, Reading PA 19607.\nThe event is free! All you need to participate is at least one seed packet with a maximum of five\, either collected from your garden or a commercial seed packet collected or packaged in 2023 or 2024. There will be a variety of seeds available to swap including veggies\, annuals\, herbs\, perennials and natives. There will also be several educational presentations given on winter sowing\, seed stratification and others.\nNeed more convincing? Seed swaps offer numerous benefits to gardeners\, communities\, and the environment. Some key advantages include:\n1. Biodiversity: Seed swaps encourage the exchange of heirloom\, rare\, or regionally\nadapted seeds\, which promotes genetic diversity in plants and helps preserve heritage varieties that might otherwise be lost.\n2. Free: Gardeners can acquire a wide variety of seeds for free\, significantly reducing the cost of purchasing seeds from commercial sources.\n3. Community Building: Seed swaps foster connections among gardeners\, allowing them to share knowledge\, tips\, and experiences.\n4. Local Adaptation: Seeds exchanged at swaps are often locally grown and better\nadapted to the specific climate and conditions of the area\, improving their chances of\nthriving in local gardens.\n5. Sustainability: Seed swaps promote sustainable gardening practices by encouraging seed saving\, reducing the reliance on commercial seed production\, and lowering the environmental footprint associated with seed packaging and transportation.\n6. Cultural Preservation: Sharing seeds also helps preserve culturally significant plants\nand food traditions\, as participants exchange varieties that may have historical or cultural relevance to their region or heritage.\nPlease use the QR Code to find information on how the seed swap works\, on how to collect a variety of seeds\, blank labels\, and so much more!\n#PennStateExtension #mastergardener #berksnature

SUMMARY:Seed Sense: Mastering Seed Saving\, Storage and Collection
DESCRIPTION:Seeds are one of the most interesting parts of the plant world; because packed into what is sometimes just the size of a grain of sand\, is the potential for an entire plant. \nThere are many reasons to collect seeds for replanting from year to year – perhaps to save money or for the challenge and surprise. And many gardeners carefully save seeds of a family heirloom they wish to pass down to future generations or from a specific plant variety that can’t be found in seed catalogs to share with friends and family. \nSeed saving is a fun activity and the seeds of many garden vegetable plants are easy to collect and save. Join us in October for presentations on how and when to collect seeds from typical vegetable varieties\, common garden flowers and native plants. Registrants will also learn collecting and saving seeds to assure that they are viable the following year and why proper seed packet labeling is so very important. There will be a presentation on all the different types of seed heads and how learning this can help determine when and how to collect its seeds. \nAfter the presentations\, spend some time at our informational tables discovering different types of seed storage\, how to determine seed viability\, seed cleaning techniques…. And speak with some of the presenters to have your questions answered. Lastly participants can take a walk with us through a Berks Nature wildflower garden. See in person how to determine if a seed head is ready for collection and how to collect seeds on the go. \nFREE EVENT! \nRegistration ends Thursday\, October 3rd. \nPlease note\, end times are approximate.
