What steps did they take to rise above financial risks and eventually become financially strong and thriving? Who helped them along the way? Dee Shafer (Shafdon Farms)\, Dale Brown (Jobo Holsteins)\, and Mark Mosemann (Misty Mountain Farm) will each share their unique story about the process in moving from a point of higher risk to becoming more financially stable. They will answer these questions and more during a producer panel discussion facilitated by Dr. Bob Fry\, a veterinarian and business consultant for producers in the Mid-Atlantic region. \nDee Shafer grew up on a small dairy farm in Frederick County\, MD. After high school\, she attended Virginia Tech and earned a bachelor’s degree in Dairy Science in 2000. They farm 900 acres and raise all replacement heifers on the farm. Mark has a bachelor’s degree in dairy and animal science from Penn State and fulfills the role of general farm manger on the dairy. Mark and his wife\, Lauren\, have four children. \nDr. Bob Fry graduated from the University of Georgia\, College of Veterinary Medicine in 1977 and then began a bovine veterinary practice on the Delmarva Peninsula. He continues to provide consulting services to producers in the mid-Atlantic and provides technical support for the Pro Ag Premix Company in Lebanon. \nTariffs\, Trade Policy\, and the Impact on Global Dairy Markets with Tony Rice\nThe conversation surrounding tariffs and trade policy has never been louder\, but what points are truly worth dialing in on? What kind of impact are we seeing in the global dairy market landscape\, and what does this all mean for the overall dairy industry and the producers we work with? Tony Rice\, Trade Policy Director at the US Dairy Export Council and native of a PA dairy farm\, will break down what tariffs and trade policy really mean for global dairy markets. \nAs the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) Trade Policy Director\, Tony Rice works with NMPF’s Trade Policy team to develop\, implement and communicate NMPF’s work to support policies that promote U.S. dairy exports\, seek removal of policies that impede those exports and address foreign barriers to U.S. dairy sales. NMPF does this work in concert with the U.S. Dairy Export Council. Tony also manages supply chain policy for both organizations. A native of a Pennsylvania dairy farm\, Rice has a master’s degree in applied economics from Johns Hopkins University and an undergraduate degree in agribusiness management from Penn State University. He currently lives in Arlington\, VA. \nAccessing Grant Support & Other Resources for Your Dairy Clients with Jayne Sebright\, facilitator \nNavigating the planning and capital investment associated with any dairy project can seem insurmountable\, but there are plenty of resources out there to help. Hear from organizations about the unique and often untapped resources available to farm businesses – and hear from one producer who has figured out how to leverage the resources to find opportunities for their dairy. \nJayne Sebright has served in the role of executive director for both the Center for Dairy Excellence and Dairy Excellence Foundation since 2016. As director\, she leads a team of eight individuals who are passionate about helping Pennsylvania’s dairy farm families to thrive and inspiring dairy’s next generation to prosper.

As part of an annual joint project between Horizon Farm Credit\, Penn State Extension\, and the Center for Dairy Excellence\, you’ll hear the 2024 takeaways and data points that have been identified through 17 key benchmarks calculated from Pennsylvania dairy farm data. These annual benchmarks compare individual dairy operations to how the top dairies in the data set are performing financially from year to year. \nRob Goodling is an agricultural business consultant with Horizon Farm Credit in the Lewisburg office. Rob has over twenty years of experience helping producers understand their farm business records and analyses to grow their operations. His specialties include financial business analysis\, cost of production analysis\, cash flow planning and budgeting\, QuickBooks consultation and troubleshooting\, dairy record evaluation\, and team facilitation. \nSmoothing the Road for the Future: Succession Planning and Business Continuity with Mike Hosterman and Jennifer Wetzel\nAs we strive to future-proof our farms\, smoothing the road for future generations to ensure business continuity is one of the most important parts of succession planning. Her commitment to the agricultural sector extends to her role as a Succession Coordinator for the International Farm Transition Network and the Pennsylvania Center for Dairy Excellence. \nMike Hosterman has been with Horizon Farm Credit and its predecessor organization for 33 years. In his role\, Mike works with farm operations to conduct all types of strategic planning\, business planning\, transition/succession planning\, budgeting\, benchmarking\, and efficiency reviews. During his 33 years at Farm Credit\, Mike has worked with various ag operations and businesses in 6 states and has primarily worked with dairy clients to benchmark their operations and make profitable business decisions. From robotics to automated cropping tools\, these producers will share their honest outlook on how technology impacts efficiency\, innovation and profitability. \nAlan Waybright is owner of Mount Rock Dairy in Cumberland County\, PA. He has been in dairy farming for the past 40 years\, spending the first 35 years working in his family’s multi-family partnership in Gettysburg before becoming a sole owner of Mount Rock Dairy in 2019. The farm is currently undergoing an expansion from 650 cows to 1\,000 cows. \nBen Peckman and his wife operate Slate Ridge Dairy in Franklin County\, PA. They milk approximately 150 cows and raise all of their replacement heifers. They have diversified the dairy operation through cash crops\, raising and finishing their bull calves\, grazing a group of native beef steers on some of their cover crops\, and selling grain to local farms and feed mills. Ben utilizes several innovative planting and cropping strategies on his operation\, including highly diverse cover crop mixes\, a green planting approach\, a seed-buying group with neighboring farms\, and more. \nMatt Brake (pictured on the left) of Oakleigh Farm in Franklin County\, PA manages the farm in partnership with his father Glenn and other family members. Together\, they milk 120 cows and farm 400 acres. They also raise their own heifers and calves\, and their herd of Holstein cows is 100 percent registered. Walters will provide an overview of changes in the Dairy Margin Coverage (DMC) Program for 2024. With the Farm Bill extended through December\, DMC enrollment is now open\, with dairy farmers having until April 29 to enroll in the margin-based insurance coverage program. The DMC margin has already been announced for January at $8.48 per hundredweight\, yielding a $1.02 indemnity payment for those farms that choose a $9.50 coverage level. \nIn 2023\, farms that enrolled in the DMC Program had an added layer of protection when milk prices fell to very low levels during the summer months. While futures prices do currently appear better than where they were in 2023\, there is still a lot of uncertainty in the marketplace. Protecting your dairy against margin risks is an essential tool in managing your business throughout 2024. \nIn addition to the 2024 DMC updates\, Jayne Sebright will provide a short recap on where dairy markets are and what factors could influence the margins going forward in 2024. \nIndividuals can join via conference call\, webinar\, or podcast format.
