DESCRIPTION:Strategies for Season Extension & Winter Cover Cropping\nPennypack Farm & Education Center\n685 Mann Rd\nHorsham\, PA 19044\nOctober 8\, 2024\n3:00 PM-5:00 PM\nJoin us for our second seasonal tour of Pennypack Farm & Education Center in Montgomery County\, PA\, to learn about their strategies for season extension and winter cover cropping.\nLearning from Pennypack’s experience growing for a 180-member\, 14-week CSA share\, we’ll cover how to manage winter crops through topics such as low tunnel and high tunnel production\, planting and harvest schedules\, root vegetable production and storage\, winter greens production\, soil health\, variety selection\, row covers\, and more. \nFounded in 2003 and co-managed by Kirstie and Steph Jones\, Pennypack Farm & Education Center is a 13-acre diversified vegetable farm that uses organic practices to grow for a CSA and food donation program. One of the primary components of Pennypack’s soil health program is the use of cover crops during all four seasons to build soil structure\, prevent erosion\, and manage weeds.  \nKirstie and Steph will share their experience with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS)’s Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP)\, which supports their farm in developing diverse cover crop mixes to meet their sustainability and soil health goals. \nStick around after the workshop to connect with other attendees and enjoy some local (hot or cold) apple cider and apple cider donuts.

Come with questions and be ready to gain real-life application skills.  \nHue Karreman is a pioneer of organic veterinary medicine and a writer of multiple books on organic\, natural\, and sustainable dairy cattle practices. After spending the beginning of his career in the Lancaster and Chester County areas as a practicing vet\, he now farms in North Carolina at Reverence Farms. His dairy herd consists of 75 A2 jersey\, 100% grass-fed cows. He has a raw milk herd share\, as well as chickens\, pigs\, beef\, and sheep that are directly marketed to customers.

Beekeeping started as a hobby on the farm and has grown into a 90-hive operation. With a partnership with Hives For Heroes\, Funny Farm Apiaries uses their platform to help mentor Veterans & First Responders. Researchers say the act of beekeeping may help people with mental health issues such as stress. In addition to “beekeeping therapy\,” Funny Farms builds connections with the community through mentoring\, beekeeper experiences\, talks\, farm tours\, and honey sales. \nCan’t make it on this date? Join us here to connect and learn more! \nAbout the farm: Operating since 1987\, Seven Stars Farm is a 420-acre certified Biodynamic dairy farm located in northern Chester County\, PA. The farm uses the milk from its Jersey herd to produce Seven Stars Organic Yogurt. Its yogurt is sold via natural foods distributors throughout the eastern United States. \nPlease note: This event is designed for individuals involved in dairy grazing\, advanced pasture management\, or interested in Dairy Grazing Apprenticeship.
