SUMMARY:Addressing Climate Change Challenges through Vineyard Management Strategies
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE WEBINAR \nClimate change and dynamic weather patterns challenge management in agricultural production systems; what “worked” during one season may not be as effective in another season if weather patterns differ. In vineyards\, productivity and quality potential are threatened by weather patterns that can result in early bud break\, kill primary grapevine buds\, perturb growth and vigor\, amplify disease prevalence\, and/or limit grape and wine quality potential\, to name a few. During this session\, weather patterns will be reviewed across several growing regions\, new and updated crop insurance options for commercial grape growers will be reviewed\, and grower panelists will review their approaches to dealing with climate change and/or mitigating climate change through vineyard management strategies. \nEVENT DETAILS \nEastern Viticulture and Enology Forum Series” (EVEF) is a collaborative effort between the Penn State Extension Grape and Wine Team and several viticulture and enology Extension programs from the following U.S. land grant institutions: Colorado State University\, Cornell University\, University of Georgia\, Iowa State University\, University of Maryland\, Ohio State University\, and Rutgers University. As part of the Eastern Viticulture and Enology Forum Webinar Series\, this session is a collaborative effort between these viticulture and enology extension programs coordinated for grape growers and winemakers. \nWHEN \nApril 29\, 2024\n(11:00 AM-12:30 PM ET) \nWho is this for? \nVineyard owners\nWinery owners\nVineyard managers\nWinemakers\nWhat will you learn? \nReview climate/weather patterns in grape-growing regions\nOverview of crop insurance\, focus on grape/grapevine policies\nVineyard management practices to mitigate climate change threats\nUse of niche cultivars for resiliency to dynamic weather patterns\nThis event is being offered at no charge to participants. \nRegistration is required to receive the link to access the webinar. \nRegistrants will also receive access to the webinar recording.

SUMMARY:Streambank Restoration Using Live Stakes
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE WORKSHOP \nSteambanks without deep-rooted vegetation are susceptible to soil erosion during high waters and heavy storms. As soils are washed away\, this can lead to numerous problems including sediment pollution in the water\, loss of aquatic habitat\, loss of land\, and deeply channeled streams. One restoration method is using live stakes installed in the streambanks. Live stakes are cuttings from certain trees and shrubs which will grow roots when in consistently moist soils. As the roots grow and intertwine\, they hold back soil and can rebuild eroding banks. The shrubs also provide habitat and other ecological benefits. Attendees will learn about the involved organizations and why live stakes are a cost-effective method of streambank repair in this hands-on workshop. \nEVENT DETAILS \nJoin us at this complimentary interactive workshop to gain insights into the technique of live-staking and delve into the history of the Beaver Creek Dam. \nWHEN \nApril 24\, 2024\n(10:00 AM-12:30 PM) \nWHERE \nBeaver Creek Dam\n381 E Reeceville Rd\nDowningtown\, PA 19335\nThe shallow impoundment behind Beaver Creek Dam was dewatered in 2020\, leaving a wetland area ripe for habitat development. Live stakes adjacent to Beaver Creek will help stabilize the streambanks\, slow soil erosion\, and create wildlife habitat. \nAttendees are advised to dress in active attire and wear waterproof shoes or boots as the soils may become muddy. It is suggested to bring along beverages\, pruners\, and gloves. Limited supplies of boots\, gloves\, and pruners will be provided for attendee use. \nWho is this for? \nCommunity members\nThose concerned about healthy streams\nThose concerned about wildlife and pollinator habitat\nAnyone interested in using live stakes for streambank restoration\nWhat will you learn? \nThe history of Beaver Creek Dam\nLearn About Chester County Water Resources Authority water management\nHow to install live stakes\nThis project is a collaboration between Chester County Water Resources Authority and Penn State Extension Master Watershed Stewards. \nThis event is being offered at no charge to participants.

SUMMARY:Choose Native Mini-Workshop
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE WEBINAR \nCommunity members\, volunteers\, and interested professionals are invited to register for this virtual mini-workshop focused on replacing invasive species with those native to Pennsylvania in landscapes and water gardens. Landscaping and water gardening activities often lead to the unintended introduction and spread of invasive plant species to our natural lands and waterways. Once established\, invasive species can degrade natural habitats by outcompeting native species for space\, light\, and nutrients. Invasive species can impact the food web by altering the plant community and decreasing the diversity of plants available for food sources\, habitat\, and shelter. Preventing invasive plant introductions by utilizing native alternatives in landscapes and water gardens is a viable solution. This Choose Native mini-workshop will introduce participants to native species options and creative ways to include native species in landscapes and aquatic designs. \nEVENT DETAILS \nThis free two-hour webinar will delve into the significance of Pennsylvania native species. \nWHEN \nApril 16\, 2024\n(6:00 PM-8:00 PM ET) \nWho is this for? \nProperty owners\nLandscapers\nThose wanting to learn more about invasive and native plants\nNative plant enthusiasts\nWhat will you learn? \nThe importance of Pennsylvania native species\nImpacts of invasive species in the built environment Ideas for utilizing native plants in the landscape\nManaging native species in landscapes and water gardens\nThis mini-workshop is hosted by Pennsylvania Sea Grant and Penn State Extension with a special guest presentation by Native Creations Landscaping Services. \nThis event is being offered at no charge to participants thanks to funding from the Richard King Mellon Foundation and our partner\, the Great Lakes Commission. \nRegistration is required to receive the link to access the webinar. \nRegistrants will also receive access to the webinar recording. \nRegister By\nApril 16\, 2024
