SUMMARY:Ladies of 20th Century Pennsylvania Dutch Literature and Illustration-Virtual
DESCRIPTION:For our March Second Saturday program\, Candace K. Perry\, Curator of the Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center\, has meticulously researched the journey of female authors and illustrators who have incorporated Pennsylvania German themes into their works of fiction and non-fiction. Perry’s research covers women like Helen R. Martin\, the author of Tillie the Mennonite Maid\, and Katherine Milhous\, author and illustrator of Appolonia’s Valentine. These talented ladies paved the way for present-day “bonnet fiction” authors\, but their themes were often centered on anachronisms\, folk beliefs\, and patriarchal attitudes that they perceived as part of Pennsylvania German culture. \nThis program will be held via Zoom. A Zoom link will be emailed to participants before the event date. The cost of this program is $5 for BHC members and $8 for non-members.
