Streambank Restoration Using Live Stakes
April 24 @ 10:00 am - 12:30 pm
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
Steambanks without deep-rooted vegetation are susceptible to soil erosion during high waters and heavy storms. As soils are washed away, this can lead to numerous problems including sediment pollution in the water, loss of aquatic habitat, loss of land, and deeply channeled streams. One restoration method is using live stakes installed in the streambanks. Live stakes are cuttings from certain trees and shrubs which will grow roots when in consistently moist soils. As the roots grow and intertwine, they hold back soil and can rebuild eroding banks. The shrubs also provide habitat and other ecological benefits. Attendees will learn about the involved organizations and why live stakes are a cost-effective method of streambank repair in this hands-on workshop.

The shallow impoundment behind Beaver Creek Dam was dewatered in 2020, leaving a wetland area ripe for habitat development. Live stakes adjacent to Beaver Creek will help stabilize the streambanks, slow soil erosion, and create wildlife habitat.
Attendees are advised to dress in active attire and wear waterproof shoes or boots as the soils may become muddy. It is suggested to bring along beverages, pruners, and gloves. Limited supplies of boots, gloves, and pruners will be provided for attendee use.
