November 9 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm$5.00
ABOUT THE WEBINAR
Interested in keeping pigs for your homestead or as a new livestock business? Rearing pigs starts with an understanding of your goals for the pigs and what pigs need to be reared comfortably and profitably for your property and goals. This talk will define the FLAWS of keeping pigs (feed, lighting, air, water, space) so you can create the optimal space for your sanity and their growth.
Join an educational webinar that will provide valuable insights into raising backyard poultry and hogs.
November 9, 2023
6 p.m. – 8 p.m.
This talk will focus on rearing pigs for pork, with identified areas for consideration if you hope to keep breeding pigs as a future operation. Penn State Animal Science Professor Elizabeth Hines will present this session on swine. Does your municipality allow the keeping of poultry? What is your species, breed or strain of interest? What considerations should you keep in mind when selecting poultry? Where do you procure healthy birds?
We will define the FLAWS of poultry (feed, lighting, air/ventilation, water, and space/socialization.), discuss types of feed and feeding programs, lighting for laying and non-laying chickens, air quality and ventilation, water quality, and space allocation and coop basics for chickens. We will offer specifics on egg production: breed selection, lighting, feeding, egg collection, washing, and distribution, as well as specifics on meat production: breed/strain, feeding, weight measurements, and basic food-safe processing. Penn State Extension Educator Torey Fischer will present this session on poultry.
Living on a Few Acres is a webinar series developed for the beginning producer or homesteader who is looking to become more self-sufficient or take the first step in producing a product. These two-hour programs are designed to explain the very basic information on how to get started but provide resources with more advanced information as you continue pursuing your goal or hobby. In 2023, Living on a Few Acres will be split into a spring & fall series. Topics in the spring included beekeeping, syrup making, soil fertility, vegetable gardening, tree and small fruit production, home food preservation, backyard greenhouses, and hydroponic production.
